Our Elders

At River Valley, there are 7 Elders committed to shepherding and leading those who call River Valley their church home. We base our leadership structure on New Testament principles of church leadership. And a central theme that emerges is that the church needs to be led by a plurality of godly leaders as defined in 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:6-9. Selection is based on: Character, Competency, Chemistry, and Calling. This plurality of leadership extends to the Elders empowerment of gifted and passionate teams specifically designed to deal with specific ministry challenges like the Staff Leadership Team; finances; buildings; conflict/discipline/restoration; global impact; church planting and so on. These teams report to the Elders for final approval.

Our Elders take seriously their charge to glorify God as Christ’s church. This means wrestling with difficult decisions from a macro and micro perspective … with a lot in between. On a daily basis and in their monthly meetings, the Elders team tackles key issues facing the church. These include:

  • Providing input to the Finance Team on financial or risk-management issues
  • Determining and revising policy in terms of church belief or biblical interpretation
  • Responding to societal issues of moral and ethical relevance
  • Overseeing financial concerns (approving budget, determination of compensation; property decisions; entering into contracts.)
  • Overseeing ministry teams that deal with conflict resolution, discipline, and restoration
  • Mentoring staff or members of the congregation
  • Reviewing strategic plans created by the other leadership teams
  • Serving in an area of passion within the ministries of the local church

The tasks and responsibilities of the Elders vary greatly and require discernment, as they strive to keep the church on its biblical course.
